Follow the meandering trail through the white pines, hemlocks, and craggy rocks along the Youghiogheny River... take in all the beauty of nature. All of a sudden you come across a trail that seems less traveled... you decide to take it. As you walk a bit you enter a small secluded place and there it is... Tolliver Falls.... creation displayed at its best.

"Tolliver Falls" is my second painting of intimate and peaceful waterfalls. These falls are also found in Garrett County, Maryland, at the Swallow Falls State Park (See my painting "Muddy Creek Falls #1").

The Master's Gaze

Jesus has been the central figure in the lives of many since his arrival... no wonder that he would be depicted in art for centuries. From the early religious iconic symbols, through the work of the Old Masters, to the present day... he has made a major impact on the art world.

Artist depictions of Jesus are from much later than his time walking the earth. Therefore, we do not have any way of knowing exactly what he looked like. More importantly, the Bible seems to place no great importance on Jesus' physical appearance. Isaiah tells us: "He has no form or majesty that we should look upon Him, nor appearance that we should be attracted to Him" (Isaiah 53:2).

Many different pictures of Jesus are shown to us in the world.

Question: Which one is the right one?

Answer: His personal features and appearance are of no importance when compared to the reason He came to this world... I love how God's Word (the Bible) doesn't get caught up in pointless details (like what Jesus looked like) that could distract us from the truth. My favorite description of Jesus is found in John 14:6.

One of my favorite artists is John Singer Sargent. I have spent a lot of time studying and copying works of some of my favorite masters and this piece is a cover of one of Sargents portrait studies... "Portrait of Edith French". Last summer I took a workshop under artist, John Cox, and one of the topics was working with a limited palette. This workshop painting was painted with two colors plus black and white.

My wife came across this scene while spending the day in Wilmington, North Carolina.... lucky for me she had the camera. I really enjoy painting city street scenes like this... especially in the old historical sections of town. I could paint 100 paintings in a three block radius of Front Street in downtown Wilmington and every one be fresh and unique.

SOLD... Thanks again Andrew!

Do you remember service stations? When was the last time someone checked your oil, washed your windshield, and pumped your gas? A few still exist but they are rapidly becoming a thing of the past. Many are abandoned like the one captured in this painting, "Remember When?" which has a nostalgic feel of days gone by... when service meant more than convience... a slower time. I miss that...

This impressionistic painting, "The Old Covered Bridge" was done as a demo for Mrs Nickel's 7th and 8th grade art classes last week. I set up my easel... painted, and answered some really cool questions. We discussed the elements of art, various styles, techniques, etc. and had a great time... well... at least the 7th graders (and me) had a great time.
